Weathered Hope Block:
- Weathered Hope (229 card set, Large, Finished)
- Bitter Turmoil (150~175 card set, Medium, NearFinished)
- Aftermath (100~125 card set, Small, In progress)
The rest of this blog will consist of the Bitter Turmoil primer, which will introduce you to some mechanics and spoil some new cards, most of which were never revealed before! This is in the same format as the Weathered Hope primer, which can be found here > http://www.facebook.com/#!/note.php?note_id=146231645414192.
Bitter Turmoil is a custom set created by Torio Boscacci. This set is a direct follow up to Weathered Hope and while it follows some of the feeling that WH brought, there are so many unique twists to this set. But let's go over the basics.
As with any set, there are new mechanics and returning mechanics. Here are a sample of each:
WH mechanics:
Duration X - "This permanent comes into play with X age counters. On your upkeep, remove an age counter. If you cannot, shuffle this card into your library." This is usually used in cards that are overpowered for the mana you invest in them. For example:
This effect, even at the common rarity, is very powerful! Especially with a new set mechanic, Volatile, but that comes later. The drawback is you only get a couple of turns to use it, however with haste your opponent cant prepare for your onslaught as well.
One of my favorite mechanics, Reign, is also from the Weathered Hope set. Reign usually means if you control a permanent that is related to the spell, then you will get an extra effect from it. Usually, this will come from the color of the spell, such as Earthcrush - but it can also be from it's Tribal.
Bitter Turmoil Mechanics!
Volatile - This creature is so vile it is shrinking itself and all other creatures near it! On each of your upkeeps, if you control the card that has this effect, you'll put a -1/-1 counter on all non-artifact creatures in play! For example:
Do you realize how awesome this guy is? Forget he's even a creature, he is board control to the max, especially against 'weenie' decks. For example, you drop this on board controlling only a Juggernaut (artifact creature). Your opponent is sitting on a 4/4 Thrun and 3 Squadron Hawks. All the hawks die next turn and the Thrun will be no match for your Juggernaut in two turns. Not to mention you still have a creature in the Abomination that can swing each turn as well!
Morph also makes a return in this set. But I feel it's needed to list it as a new mechanics because it appears on non-creature cards as well this time around! Just take a look:
Yeah, I'll admit its not game changing in this example, but it is neat. Early on if you need a cheaper casting card, you got it. And if you draw it later on, no ones gonna be too upset at this ever burning lava axe. But, the true joy comes in activating its morph cost - you'll get it for 2 less mana! Imagine this on other cards, and in the opposite way. Maybe a cheaper card with a more expensive morph cost, but with a bonus when you activate it that way? Kinda like kicker maybe? Who knows?
The final mechanic requires a little more about the set. You know about the purple mana, right? Maybe not? Well heres a few that were recently spoiled and some new ones:
These cards use the Rift Basic Land, which produces one purple mana. Purple is the best color for counter magic, and can provide decent burn as back up. Purple also fights enchantments, uses a good amount of enchantments, and is fair at edict effects (when you target the player instead of the target, like Consuming Vapors?) They also specialize in a new mechanic, called Forget.
Forget - Exile this card under that owners control. Whenever the owner draws a card, that player may draw a card they have Forgotten instead.
Heres a few already spoiled examples and a new one...
There will be many returning mechanics, but much less than Weathered Hope. This set is designed to take Magic in a whole new direction and make it as unique as possible.
Also with any set, you usually see some reprints. This set has several reprints from many different sets throughout Magic's rich history. Here's one for you:
In closing, thanks for reading and supporting this. I hope the purple colored cards will be accepted but I know I will be met with some resistance. Give it a try. Its not overpowered, its not underpowered. Its just another angle to look at the game from.
What, you want another spoiler? Ok just one more, but dont expect to see any more in the next few weeks, I think I have spoiled plenty! Thanks again guys!
