Dark Ascension: How the mythics stack up...

As of posting, there are 10 of 10 mythics spoiled for Dark Ascension.  I'm going to review these mythics and see which ones are over hyped and which ones have potential.

I'd imagine you will feel the same remorse
akin to pulling a Time Reversal when you pull
a Beguiler of Wills.

Beguiler of Wills
Current Price: $2.49
Future Price: $1.50-$2.50

Beguiler of Wills is what we call a bulk mythic, and shes really the worse kind.  She does nothing backbreaking in limited unlike most other bulk mythics, and she will not touch standard.  Sure, casual players and EDH players (well, aren't they really one in the same?) will eat this up, but to those of us that like to actually bust open packs and get some value when we pull a mythic, this one will disappoint.  Final Verdict: Bulk Mythic junk.

Drogskol Reaver
Current Price: $9.99
Future Price: $2-$4
I have no clue why this guy is hyped the way that he is.  He is like a Baneslayer mixed with a worse version of Consecrated Sphinx, for 7 mana and forces you into blue/white.  He seems weaker than a Titan, and when you want a Consecrated Sphinx effect, you'd be better off with the original.  You have to connect to get the cards, and Sphinx just gives them to you on your opponents upkeep.  Sure, you can unburial this, but you aren't speeding things up since this guy should only cost 6 mana at the most. Final Verdict: Some will try to use this at first, and shortly after he will be a thing of the past.  Nice bomb to pull at the prerelease, however.

Falkenrath Aristocrat
Current Price: $8.99
Future Price: $4-$10
Falkenrath Aristocrat is a solid card.  She does not pass the "Gut Shot" test, and depending on the popularity of that card, this card may not see the light of day.  This guy has a lot of potential, including some cool combat tricks, however, the fact that you have to sac humans to get real value is offputting.  You normally aren't going to run many humans in a red/black deck right now, so most of the time you'll just be getting a 4/1 hasted flyer for four.  Still not a bad deal, but not mythic quality.  Final Verdict: Outclassed in almost every way by Olivia.  I like this card, but I still don't see much upwards potential.

Havengul Lich
Current Price: $14.99
Future Price: $4-8

Full of flavor, but might be a little trickier
to pull off then we think.
This is a really cool one.  People are already coming up with combos for it, including the infinite loop with Heartless Summoning and Perilous Myr.  The important things to remember are: 1) You still have to pay the mana costs for the card you are rezzing.  For example, if you pay 1 mana, target Grave Titan, then you'll have to pay another 6 mana, and 2) You still can only cast the creatures as a sorcery.  One of the problems with this card is that it must compete with many other cards that actually do something when they hit the battlefield.  More than likely, you wont have the mana to put his ability to use the turn he hits, so you'll have to wait until the next turn.  Even then, his ability only really shines when you run out of cards in hand and stuff to do, since he will likely strap all of your mana down.  The combo idea is cute, but 3 card combos are not practical in this format since we have limited resources that will search for those pieces.  Final Verdict: Cute card, oozing with flavor.  Has hopes of standard play, but it has its drawbacks.

Huntmaster of the Fells/Ravager of the Fells
Current Price $17.49
Future Price $5-$12

Cards that transform are nice, but a good way to evaluate them is to just assume they never transform.  I mean, 90% of the time they'll either die or they just wont transform.  Let's see what we get at face value.  A 2/2 for 4 mana, and that mana is red and green so that might restrict what decks it can go in.  You get a 2/2 wolf, and you also gain 2 life.  Not bad.  I would expect more from a mythic though.

Now on the flip side we get no more tokens, but we get a tougher creature in the form of a 4/4, plus we have a mini "Searing Blaze" effect to boot.  Final Verdict: All in all, he's pretty solid, but you usually want more bang for your buck, and this card combines a lack of value with a gamble aspect, and the big jackpot is rather disappointing, especially for a mythic dual color.

Moonveil Dragon
Current Price $2.49
Future Price $1.49

If this card were only rare, would it be a 4/4
for 7 mana?

Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
Current Price: $59.99
Future Price: $20-$40

My first thought was, why white?  I thought back a bit, remembered his name the flavor text on the Zendikar edition of Day of Judgment, remembered the role he played in Rise of the Eldrazi, and the bond that he shared with Nissa.  I shrugged, and decided to just roll with it.  I'm pretty partial to Black/White as a color combo, so maybe I can swallow this a bit better than some of you others.

But let's talk about the card itself.  I'm going to allude it to the likes of Elspeth, Knight Errant, a solid card in its time, and if Sorin stacks up, then we will have us quite the winner.  Like Elspeth, he costs 4 mana (albeit one of them is black) and starts with 3 loyalty.  While Elspeth had two +1 abilities, Sorin has only 1.  The first one is recognizable: it puts a 1/1 into play.  But Sorin actually goes one step further and gives it lifelink, a nice little bonus.  I'll just write that off as payment for the demand of two colors.  The next abilities of both walkers differ a bit, but they both play the same role: they enhance your creatures.  Elspeth had an additional +1 that gave a creature +3/+3 and flying, until the end of the turn.  Sorin does something really unique.  He puts a stackable emblem that gives a permanent attack bonus to all of your creatures.  Forever.  Emblems cannot be messed with whatsoever.  Now, I dont know if I would pay 4 mana for an effect like that, but I do know that having that option is greatly welcome with all of the 1/1 lifelinkers you'll have in play.  Now for the ultimates, I cant even compare.  Elspeth had a very expensive and usually non-impactive ultimate that I never used.  Sorin, on the other hand, has a game reversing, backbreaking ultimate that will usually spell game for your enemies.  My goal is to steal a Karn, Liberated with this move.  Final Verdict: Sorin no doubt stacks up to be the chase mythic of the set.  He will see play, but his home is undetermined at this point.  The power is there, but will the two enemy colors be an issue?

Vorapede
Current Price: $7.49
Future Price: $2-4

Undying is a pretty cool ability.  It is like a better version of persist in my opinion.  Instead of a weaker version coming back from the dead this version is stronger than ever.  And they all combo with hex parasite, which steals the counters from them and keeps them alive virtually forever.  They already spoiled an uncommon 2/1 haste with undying for 2 mana.  Green.  So naturally I was excited to see what they cooked up for a mythic with undying.  Instead, we got this fail of a mythic.  I would be ok with this card being an uncommon.  And at rare, I could write it off as a bulk rare.  But no, we seem to have a need to make nearly every mythic for Dark Ascension a failure.  Oh well.  I really have nothing good to say about this.  I just wish that it said haste where it says vigilance.  Final Verdict: I just cant see this beating the 5 drop spots that we currently have, like Garruk, Primal Hunter or Acidic Slime.  I'm sure it will see play as a one of in BirthingPod.dec but that should be the end of it.
Helvault
Current Price: Around $5 on ebay.
Future Price: $2-4
Helvault.  Pretty cool name huh?  But, does it follow the cycle of being a crappy mythic in Dark Ascension?  In short - yes.  It feels akin to Oblivion Stone, in where you can store some of your creatures inside and then wipe the board (which oblivion stone did on its own, with this new card you will have to find a way to wipe the board on your own).  You can also take a other route with it, you can just use it to exile all of your foes creatures.  Over and over again.  The problem with this lies in the fact that it is an artifact.  Artifacts die.  Especially in this format, where we tend to run many maindeck solutions to artifacts.  Green has a plethora, like Bramblecrush, Acidic Slime, and Beast Within, all which can be easily found in maindecks.  Red might not be running Oxidda Scrapmelters and Manic Vandals main deck (which I have personally ran Manics main before) but after sideboard they have these options and so much more (Ancient Grudge, anyone?) I cant help but point out that you would almost always want a Karn, Liberated, or even a Spine of Ish Sah over this card if that is your intentions.
One thing I would like to mention is the wording on this card, which I can't help but think it is an error, but its the way it is, so lets find us some loopholes!  It does indeed state that if it is put into graveyard, then that is when all 'Hel' is unleashed.  But what if it was exiled?  Then, according to the wording, all of those things are pretty much gone forever, for good and bad.  For example, lets say you are putting 'fate counters' on your own creatures, sucking them into the vault.  Later, you'll intend to wipe the board, then somehow destroy the vault yourself and unleash your stored creatures onto the battlefield.  (Lame combo, btw peoples.) So, what if right after you wipe the board, your foe uses Oblivion Ring on Helvault?  Yup, that means all of your stuff is gone.  Forever.  If Oblivion Ring is destroyed later on and Helvault reenters the battlefield, it does not remember what it exiled, since it itself was exiled and now is essentially a fresh copy.  Now, on the flip side, you can use this knowledge to your advantage.  Say, you have exiled your opponents Wurmcoil Engine and Inferno Titan with Helvault.  Now, all they have to do to get their cards back into play and kill you is destroy the Helvault.  But what if you exiled it before they are able to destroy it?  For example, you could do this with your own Oblivion Ring or even -3 with Karn, Liberated.  That would basically exile them forever, according to the wording on this card.  Magical Christmas land aside, this is a difficult process to actually make all of this work and to me it seems like a waste of time.  I just wanted to point out how this card works and that the loopholes might actually be relevant at some point or another, and its important that we know how it actually works, even if we never plan on using it.  Final Verdict: This Oblivion Stone wanna-be does not stack up.  It's two ablities are controversial to each other, giving this card less options than it seems.  It's also easy for your opponent to control how it is used.  Aside from some fringe play in Tezz.dec, this card is going straight to the mythic dump bin.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
Current Price: $7.99
Future Price: $5-10

This guy is pretty nifty.  Lots of flavor and pretty good value.  Sadly, it costs 6, and therefore we must compare it to Grave Titan.  Card by card, Grave Titan is much stronger and almost all of the time, its the card you want.  That's not saying Mikaeus isn't good.  In fact, I think he is one of the better mythics in this set.  He will see value in many ways, from EDH (pick up foil versions of this card ASAP, they will bring a pretty penny) to block, to standard.  That's not to mention when and if Grave Titan doesn't see a reprint in M13, then this guy will be the premier black 6 drop.  I think Mikaeus will be very strong in a couple of niche decks to start with.  He seems amazing in Heartless summoning, where his lord boost counteracts the -1/-1 from Heartless.  Hitting him turn 4 seems good as well.  Very possible to see him in zombies as well, as a bunch of 3/3 undying zombies just seems frightening.  One more deck you might find him in is Black/White tokens, where you make a crap ton of weak tokens that are bulked up with the likes of Intangible Virtue and this guy.  Final Verdict: It's going to take some time and some work, but don't write Mikaeus off yet.  He just might surprise you.

That's all of the Mythics for this set, unless they surprise us and do 11 instead of 10.  If you guys want me to review the rares from this set, leave feedback!  If I write all of this and get nothing back in return, it seems pointless to stay on a schedule and get this content out to you if you can't do your part!

How to trade, etc:

The easiest way to set up a trade is if you know me.  I mean, I work at Walmart, so its not that hard to find me.

If that doesnt work I also accept paypal and can ship it out to you.

To contact me to work out a trade, I'd recommend facebook.  I check it daily.  If you dont have access to my facebook, you can email me @ webmastertorio@yahoo.com - the only problem being that I do not check it often.  You can comment at the end of this blog as well and I'll try to keep up with it.

WHY AM I DOING THIS?
So, I've been wanting to put this together for a long time. Basically I wanted to make a complete list of trades I have, and cards I need. I'd love to have it auto-update every time a card changes value, or everytime a card gets traded or acquired. However I have not the technology nor the time. So expect this to be semi-updated around 3 times a month. Prices will change, so I may offer you a different price at the time of trading.

Why SPG? While the shop closed, the trades did not. I have been actively trading, selling, and buying cards from most of our "regulars" since we closed down. No, I dont have a brick and mortar store, and no, this does not fix our problem with us not having a place to play. But, this does keep a steady supply of cards flowing throughout our small community, and it does in turn keep Magic alive (somewhat). I have connections through several sites and shops and I try to get boxes at the cheapest possible price for our playgroup. This is no secret between us, but its not something I was public about until now. For now, the actual store is dead, with no plans to return. But I will keep a "cartel" going, and try be a mobile storefront for Spruce Pine's Magic card needs.

So, for this section, I'm going to list the cards my group or myself need, and what we have up for trade. Chances are, we have a ton more up for trade but we dont really want to trade them off unless we get a good deal. For example, I have a Thrun, the Last Troll ($13) that I dont really want to part with. You have a Foil Isolated Chapel ($18) that you arent really attached to. I would most likely trade off the attached card in favor of more value.

Also, I'll pretty much take any card, but if I'm not looking for it, expect a grave decrease in my offer. For example: You have a Grave Titan ($10) and you want to get rid of it before it's value drops. I have no need for it, and I also know it's value will drop soon as well. I would offer around $3-$4 for it, as opposed to $7-$8 if I needed it.

FAQ:

Q: Do you have "insert card name here"?
A: I might.  I'd use the comment section below and let me know what you are looking for.  I'll comment back or email you if you leave an email address.

Q: I don't agree with the prices you have.
A: I'm not going to give full retail price on anything.  Sorry.  I'm never really desperate for anything, so you can't make a quick buck off me like that.  I do offer fair prices for cards I'm looking for compared to say, ebay, but if that still doesn't sound fair to you then I'd have to recommend you do business elsewhere.

Q: I have a foil version of something you are looking for.  Does that mean you'll give me double?
A: Maybe.  That would depend on the card and if I even have that much to give.  Just let me know and we will figure it out.

Q: I want to make a deal, but I don't trust dealing with random people online.  What should I do?
A: Personally, if you dont know me in person, I wouldnt deal with me.   But thats just me.  This was designed mostly for the Spruce Pine Gaming community. The only other way I can think of doing it is sending an offer to you via ebay, but in that case, you'll have to cover all the fees.

Q: I have a ton of cards and I don't know what they are worth.  How much can I get for them?
A: If I know you in person, then we can do one of two things.  I can give you an amount based on what quantity you have (assuming they are all commons) or I can appraise them for you for a small fee.  The downside to me appraising them is if you have nothing of value I probably won't offer you anything.

Q: I have many cards of value but none are on your list.  Will you not give me premium value for my cards?
A: Depends on the situation.  If we are talking Black Lotuses, its not that the price isnt right, its that I dont have that kind of money (to spend on cardboard).  It might be that I feel it is overpriced.  Maybe no one in our playgroup uses it.  Or maybe I just forgot to list it.  In any case, message me what you have for trade and I'll get back to you.

Q: You said you can ship them to me.  How much is that going to cost me?
A: I'm not going to rip you on the shipping.  I'll charge an amount equal to the estimated shipping cost +5% to cover any varience.  If you want it shipped in a bubble mailer, I'll charge 50 cents.  If you want insurance, I'll charge insurance.  Pretty much you'll pay a fair price.

Innistrad Financial Guide - Part 1: White and Blue

Innistrad Financial Guide - Part 1: White and Blue

Welcome to another financial guide article.  If you've never read one of my financial articles, never fear!  I will show you how I break it down right before I start the financial section.  But first, a foreword.

Innistrad has a lot to live up to.  For a while, Magic has been showing a pattern with its block cycle.  The easiest example is our shortly rotating standard:  Zendikar and Scars.  Zendikar is a straight forward awesome block with no real craziness theme going on.  Sure, we had landfall and such, but the goal of the block was to just make awesome cards.  Scars block was extremely different.  It had the goal to shake up the standard enviroment with artifact and infect cards.  Let's go back a little.  Lorwyn was a "Zendikar" block.  Standard stuff, color pie in tact, had a tribal subtheme etc.  After that came Alara, which was very heavily themed in the multicolor theme.  So, if we take that data, we can see that we have a pattern of:

1) Standard block (Lorwyn)
2) Extreme block (Alara)
3) Standard block (Zendikar)
4) Extreme block (Scars)
5) Standard block? (Innistrad)

By the cards spoiled, we do indeed have a standard block shaping up.  Small tribal subtheme, color pie is intact, a few multicolor cards but nothing to shake up the enviroment.  As we can see from Lorywn and Zendikar, Innistrad has a lot to live up to.

But does it hit the mark?

That's hard to answer at this point.  I havent even went to the prerelease, much less worked on constructed decks with Innistrad.  However, I can tell you just by looking at it that this set is solid.  We are taking a step down in power (a feat first set in motion by Scars of Mirrodin) so games will be slower.  We no longer have bolt.  3 toughness is good again.  So some cards that we may be overlooking might actually be a lot better than we give them credit for at first glance.  But this is shaping up to be a great standard format.

Today I'll be going over the white and blue cards of the set and see what value we can expect these cards to hit.

I'm going to be using the same format as I did for the M12 Financial guide, so heres a template of how this will look:

EXAMPLE

Angelic Destiny

Current Price - $X (this is the price this card is currently going for on starcitygames.com)

Short Term Price - $X(this is the price I predict the card will go for within a month or so)

Long Term Price - $X (this is the price I predict the card will go for when the price settles)

Notes: (This is where I will discuss my prediction in detail)

Bottom Line: (This is the thesis of my opinion.)

That's it!  Enjoy the predictions!

MYTHICS

Angelic Overseer

Current Price - $5.99

Short Term Price - $5

Long Term Price - $4-5

Notes: This card looks like a Baneslayer comparison at first sight, but upon a second glance, it appears to be much different.  The loss of lifelink and first strike make it a lot more iffy to attack.  Conditional Hexproof and Indestructible is nice, but we cant count on it.  At face value, a 5/3 flying for 5 mana is decent.
Bottom Line: The casual player in me says this card is ground breaking, but the tournament player in me says to pass it up.

Mikaeus, the Lunarch

Current Price - $7.99

Short Term Price - $3-5

Long Term Price - $2-4

Notes: When they announced they were going to have an Innistrad card in the new From the Vault series, I was psyched.  All of the From the Vaults have been awesome, and with Sword of Body and Mind being the the latest one; From the Vault: Relics, I knew it was going to be a solid card.  Not only was I wrong about the card, the whole From the Vault: Legends was a huge dissappointment.

Bottom Line: I can see it in Commander, and of course limited.  Highly doubt this will see standard play.

Mirror-Mad Phantasm

Current Price - $4.99

Short Term Price - $4-5

Long Term Price - $3-5

Notes: So, you can thank the almighty Richard Garfield for this one.  Now, this is a really fun card.  We dont see effects like this too often.  And in a graveyard block it's actually a cool idea to build around.  However, this seems way too clumsy for anything but kitchen table play.

Bottom Line: Just because Richard Garfield designs it, it doesn't mean it's pure gold.

Skaab Ruinator

Current Price - $22.29

Short Term Price - $20

Long Term Price - $10-20

Notes: Wow, a 5/6 flying for 3 mana?  What is this an allusion to?  If you said Abyssal Persecutor, you win a cookie!  Except I actually think Persecutor is better.  Sure, this is 1 mana cheaper, but how often are you gonna play this on turn 3?  Seriously.  I'm pretty sure this will tank in value but should maintain solid bottom line value as Persecutor once did.

Bottom Line: Trade these off at first, then pick them up once they lower in value.

RARES

Champion of the Parish

Current Price - $2.50

Short Term Price - $2-3

Long Term Price - $1-3

Notes: Pretty much the only thing keeping humans tribal.  Hada Freeblade.  Go go.  Fail rare.

Bottom Line: People will still look for these.  They should'nt change too much in price.

Cackling Counterpart

Current Price - $3

Short Term Price - $2

Long Term Price - $2

Notes: Don't we have enough clone effects?  Compare this to the likes of Spitting Image and Rite of Replication.  The edge on this card is the cheap cost and the flashback ability, which might give it some value.

Bottom Line: Hang on to a playset of this and see where they go.  Pick up from people who believe it to be a bulk rare.

Elite Inquisitor

Current Price - $3.49

Short Term Price - $3-4

Long Term Price - $3-6

Notes: At least as powerful as Kazandu Blademaster.  Sometimes worse, sometimes better.  He's a human, so he's pretty much an autoinclude there.  You obviously cannot count on the protection clause but its nice when it works.

Bottom Line: Solid Rare that has little potential to rise but should maintain its value as it is a good card.

Geist-Honored Monk

Current Price - $1.99

Short Term Price - $1-2

Long Term Price - $1-3

Notes: Everyone's writing this card off as a bulk rare but I think it has some potential.  Sure, 5 mana is a lot but so was Siege-Gang Commander.  The mix of ablities like the tokens having evasion and it having vigilance and the fact that it can grow in size means your foe will probably be taking some damage from this guy.  Also great in Sword decks.

Bottom Line: Underated but will not be groundbreaking.  Solid mid-range card that will be niche choice in blade decks.  Will be better with more spirit support cards in Dark Ascension.

Laboratory Maniac

Current Price - $2.49

Short Term Price - $1-2

Long Term Price - $1

Notes: Instant win cards usually are never good.  But, they always maintain some kind of value.  I have no idea how to safely break this card.  I mean if I mill myself what happens if they shock this guy in response?  That's no good.

Bottom Line: Trade these off to that kid at your shop that just has to build a deck around instant win cards.  Then laugh at him.

Ludevic's Test Subject

Current Price - $1.49

Short Term Price - $1-3

Long Term Price - $2-5

Notes: Promo card.  Another one that others are calling a bulk mythic.  This has potential.  I'd say his power level is close to that of Kargan Dragonlord's.  It's fairly easy to transform, just takes time and a 0/3 for 2 isnt a horrible defender early game.  When it turns into a 13/13 trample it will make short work of your opponent.

Bottom Line: Underrated but not sure where it fits in the meta.  Will play a part in some deck.

Mentor of the Meek

Current Price - $4.99

Short Term Price - $3-6

Long Term Price - $2-5

Notes: Eh.  Very hyped and maybe rightfully so.  I cant put my finger on it but something tells me its not as good as people say.  I do understand it's bonkers with Elspeth and other token generators but I also understand its a shockable 2/2 for 3.

Bottom Line: Very awesome if you can pull it off.  Dies way to easy and costs 1 mana too much.

Mindshrieker

Current Price - $3.99

Short Term Price - $1-3

Long Term Price - $1-2

Notes: Overhyped and ineffective.  1/1 flying for 2 is bad on the curve and doesnt fit into blue strategies.  Activated Ability costs too much and is a hit or miss.  Risky and not worth the gamble.  Also dies in easily in response.

Bottom Line: Trade these away before they plummet.

Nevermore

Current Price - $1.99

Short Term Price - $1-3

Long Term Price - $2-4

Notes: Solid mono-white hoser.  Meddling mage's biggest weakness is that it dies.  This is much harder to remove.  It also costs quite a bit.  Will be an important card to battle any up and coming combo decks.

Bottom Line: Should maintain value.  Big weapon against combo.  Too weak for main deck play.

Snapcaster Mage

Current Price - $29.99

Short Term Price - $20-25

Long Term Price - $15-25

Notes: 30 bucks?  For a rare?  Since mythics came out, its far easier to pull rares.  20 bucks is the unoffical ceiling for any normal standard rare.  Barring a few exceptions (Stoneforge Mystic for 2 weeks) this is the case.  Add to the fact that this set is going to be opened.  A LOT.  More copies = less value.  Using this, we should be able to deduce that this will surely drop.

HOWEVER, this card is very potent.  Obviously it's power scales with what cards it can be used with.  Generally, the older the format is, the better this card is.  Paying three mana at the end of your foe's turn to flash this in AND flashback brainstorm is insanity.  But it is potent in standard as well.  Doing the same with a ponder or gixitan probe is good advantage as well.  Hell, even getting a shock or a doom blade works too!  But don't be disappointed when it drops to 15 bucks after a month or two.  It's not because it's not a good card, it's because 30 bucks is too high for a normal rare and when a set like this one gets so many packs open its hard to gouge the price on any of the cards.

Bottom Line: Will dip in value.  Will be a huge player in ALL formats.  Trade these early and pick up later on.

Stony Silence

Current Price - $1.99

Short Term Price - $2

Long Term Price - $2-3

Notes: Equipment Hoser.  Nice way to deal with sword decks. Kind of hard to deal with.  Not powerful enough to be a must have, but a solid way to deal with sword decks.

Bottom Line: Will have some value.  Shouldnt change in value much, should always have a purpose.

BULK RARES

Back from the Brink - yeah. not gonna pay 6 mana for that.
Dearly Departed - Nice flavor tho
Divine Reckoning - I'd love to flash this back. Like if I could get it in my graveyard somehow. I'm not willing to risk card advantage for this kind of effect tho.
Rooftop Storm - If we could cheat this into play it would be boss.
Sturmgeist - Too much mana.
Undead Alchemist - Interesting card design. But a horrid card.

UNCOMMONS

Fiend Hunter - $1 - Human, and has built in Journey to Nowhere. Should find a home.
Intangible Virtue - $0.50 - Awesome in token decks. Gotta wait and see if we get more token support.
Dissipate - $1 - Cancel. Except better. Bonus: They reprinted it in a graveyard themed block!
Midnight Haunting - 25 cents - Join the ranks. Except for spirits. Will jump up if spirits get support.
Purify the Grave 50 cents - Need a way to deal with stuff in graveyards? If you play white, this is one of the best ways to do so.
Slayer of the Wicked 25 cents - Solid hoser card if you are playing humans.
Spectral Rider - 50 cents - Sword wielder. Enough said.
Invisible Stalker - $1 - Even better Sword wielder.

COMMONS

Armored Skaab - seems viable.
Bonds of Faith - Better than Pacifism. Not sure if that makes it playable, but its a start.
Forbidden Alchemy - Wow. Amazing card. Great even if it didnt have flashback or being an instant. Instant speed really pushes the power on this.
Frightful Delusion - Might be Magicial Christmas land, but this seems like a slap in the face if you can pull it off.
Lost in the Mist - 5 mana is steep, but it gains you tempo.
Stitched Drake - Easy to meet its requirements, and 3/4 flyer for 3 is tough. Being a Zombie is a plus.
Think Twice - seems like a good cycler. Awesome that its instant. Got play before,
should do the same this time around.
Village Bell-Ringer - Deciever Exarch again?  In white?  So Splinter Twins getting reprinted in the next set?  (God I hope not)

Thanks for checking this out.

M12 Financial - Second glance

We are entering the short term pricing period for M12 now and prices have changed a bit since we first reviewed it two weeks ago.  Prices are still changing but lets look at the most dramatic changes and which ones we should keep or get rid of:

Angelic Destiny

Starting Price(price quoted when I made my finanical guide) - $7.49

Current Price(price as of today) - $9.99

My Prediction(the price that I had predicted earlier) - $5.99

I had predicted a drop in pricing, however people have been entertaining the thought of this on a Mirran Crusader (or Serra's Ascendant) and there is indeed a white weenie deck in the works.  I still believe this card will drop in price and it is at its peak right now.  The interaction with this and a Mirran Crusader with Squadron Hawk as back up brings us back to a Caw-Blade style format and I have no doubt this card will see play, but its not as good as the price shows.

Chandra, The Firebrand

Starting Price - $29.99

Current Price - $39.99

My Prediction - $22.50

How this card is seeing a $40 price tag is beyond me.  Its seeing no play and it goes up.  Go figure.  The potential for this card still is unknown, but I'm just waiting to see it show up in Pyromancer's Ascension.

Jace, Memory Adept

Starting Price - $39.99

Current Price - $34.99

My Prediction - $30

This card will see play, will win games, and will be even better in Innistrad.  Right now its not doing a damn thing, hence the price drop.  Be patient, and it may pay off...

Solemn Simulacrum

Starting Price - $4.99

Current Price - $5.99

My Prediction - $5.99

This card is popping up in some decklists, but they arent abusing him.  Just using him as a cantrip seems to be powerful enough, but this guy has much more going for him.  Let's dig a little better guys.  I'll start you off....Smallpox.

Visions of Beyond

Starting Price - $7.49

Current Price - $5.99

My Prediction - $5.99

Let's make this clear: This card will see zero play until Innistrad.  And even there its a toss up.  I really cant say if this would be the time to pick these up, but my plan is to horde a couple and trade the rest.  That way I'm not stuck with a ton if they drop and if they are needed I'll only need two more to make a playset.

Phanstamal Image

Starting Price - $2.49

Current Price - $3.99

My Prediction - $2.99

Well, I did guess it would go up, but not by that much!  People dont even care about the Illusion part, they just want a two mana destroy target legendary creature or two mana primeval titan.  Looks like he with hover around 5 bucks for a while, maybe keeping up with Phyrexian Metamorph.

Cards I wrote off too soon as a bulk:

- Rune-Scarred Demon: Going to see commander play.  Also great as a 7 mana squadron hawk as it can keep searching for copies of itself. (Current Price - $1.49)

- Sphinx of Uthunn: See Above.  Great for combo decks as well. (Current Price - $1.49)

Yeah, Yeah, so what, I missed a few of them.  But if you want to nitpick, compare my prediction prices with starcitygames.com prices and see how many I got right!  Plus, we are still just beginning to enter the priceshift.  How much will the 3 new walkers be next month?  Its anyones guess.

M12 full spoiler and Financial Guide!

Foreword:
First, I'd like to admit something. I have felt and still feel to some degree that M12 is a weak set. M11 was a strong set especially for those looking to make some money as prime time was hitting 60 bucks at the time, baneslayer was still strong at 35 bucks, grave was 30 bucks, fauna shaman was rocking 10 bucks and the battlelands still had value too. M12 gives us so many weak mythics its not funny. Yes, it is another chance to crack some titans, but titans will have much less value this time around. The only mythics that might have some value will be the new planeswalkers, and its going to be so hard to pin a value on them right now. They seem sorta bad at the moment but they might be plants for the innastrad block. But its hard to value a card on ifs and buts. So what, we might miss calling the next Splinter Twin. That card went up over 1000% overnight whenever people put 2 and 2 together about the deciever exarch combo. I am much more convinced that M12 is a better set now that I know we are getting new planeswalkers, but I still think this is a set I wouldnt go crazy over. Buy a box, trade the stuff you dont want for stuff you are looking for, and wait for everything to go down. There will be a lot of things going up and down a month after M12 hits, and also after rotation. Thats about as far as I would want to predict. That's about it.

Enjoy the guide.

MYTHICS

Angelic Destiny

Current Price - $7.50 (this is the price this card is currently going for on starcitygames.com)

Short Term Price - $5-7(this is the price I predict the card will go for within a month or so)

Long Term Price - $3-5 (this is the price I predict the card will go for when the price settles)

Notes: I think this card usually will be better than Armored Ascension. I would love to throw this on a batterskull germ token. But seriously, enchantments usually suck, and even though we are getting some enchantment support (Auramancer, etc.) its usually not enough. One thing to note is that if someone unsummons the creature this enchantment is on then Angelic Destiny will go to the graveyard. So there are loopholes. I think this card would have been a great 1 to 2 buck rare instead of a 3 to 4 buck mythic.

Bloodlord of Vaasgoth

Current Price - $7.99

Short Term Price - $4-6

Long Term Price - $2.50-5

Notes: This card is a trap. Unless we get some vampires that have something that makes getting those +1/+1 counters really worthwhile (such as double strike?) then this guy is really pointless. I mean, what was so damn OP about Vampire Nocturnus? And seeing how Cemetery Reaper is seeing a reprint my guess is support for vamps is gone and zombies are making a comeback in Innastrad. (Note: This is the prerelease event promo)

Chandra, the Firebrand

Current Price - $29.99

Short Term Price - $20-25

Long Term Price - $15-$35

Notes: Im not comfortable pinning a price on her yet. She is my least favorite of the 3 new walkers, but she does have some upsides to her. First, shes only 4 mana. History proves 4 mana is where you want to be if you are going to be a powerful walker. Also, note that she is easy to splash. She is the first walker ever to do this. She is my call for the gamble of the set, you might strike gold, but you might get burned as well.

Furyborn Hellkite

Current Price - $3.99

Short Term Price - $2.99

Long Term Price - $1.99

Notes: Everyone that knows me also knows I have a very strong opinion about this card. It's horrible. I would never pay 7 mana for a 12/12 flyer. Why would I pay it for a 6/6 flyer that sometimes is a 12/12 instead? This card is a huge trap and your money can be spent elsewhere. The only possible way this will see the light of day is if something Dragonish comes out that makes this guy cost less and do way more. Trade em for stuff before they drop.

Garruk, Primal Hunter

Current Price - $29.99

Short Term Price - $20-25

Long Term Price - $30-35

Notes: Maybe its just me, but I think Garruk is insane this time around. People are really upset he loses his ability to ramp. I agree with you, but think about it this way: M12 has a ton of ramp! We have Birds, Llanowar Elves, Rampant Growth, Cultivate, Wayfarers Bauble, Solemn Simulacrum and tons more! Ok people, have you looked at his +1? WTF!?!?! That is insane. A 3/3 token PLUS Garruk GAINS Loyalty? And I know his -3 kind of is rough since his starting loyalty is low. But Harmonize got a ton of play and this is like a Harmonize "Charm" since you have different options. I'm not huge on his ultimate, but I have no doubt that it will decimate your foe very quickly. I might be sticking my neck out a little too much for this guy but I did for Phyrexian Obliterator as well, and he is shaping up to be a major player now with Jace 2.0 out of the picture. I would recommend you to trade your Chandras straight up for Garruk asap.

Gideon Jura

Current Price - $19.99

Short Term Price - $20

Long Term Price - $15-25

Notes: It's no secret, we all know Gideon is an absolute powerhouse. The problem is that he went from a $60 goes into everything white (Fun Fact: When Gideon peaked at $60 bucks Jace 2.0 was $50.) into a niche $20 card. He even dropped to $10 for a while since no one was using him. With traditional U/W control on the rise he might see some play but even there he has to compete with Venser and Elspeth. He's one mana too pricey to top the curve for white weenie decks. But it's undenialable, he is a fanastic card and theres a reason they replaced Ajani with him in the core set: He's just plain good. As far as his future, its really hard to predict where he might appear, but if history repeats he will see some play.

Sorin Markov

Current Price - $9.99

Short Term Price - $7-9

Long Term Price - $4-5

Notes: I've been trying to force a copy of Sorin into my mono black control deck for a while now. It just doesnt fit. I used to use him in my Grixis Control and it would usually be the first of three nasty spells I would cast (the other two being Cruel Ultimatium and Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker.) He was the bait card, and I loved when people wasted counter magic on him. If he resolved, I had two choices: Gain some life because I was too low, or cut my foe to 10 then follow it up with Cruel (and then 9 out of 10 times they would concede at this point.) Since then, something happened. I'd like to call this phenonemon Grave Titan. It has so much more value to it. I think the reason Sorin doesnt fit into mono black control is because it's more aggressive than standard control decks. Often times Im playing a turn 3 Obliterator, turn 4 Liliana, and turn 5 Grave Titan. Theres just no room for Sorin in that curve. Since vamps stopped playing Nocturnus and Bloodwitch, the curve is way too tight to include Sorin there. So the big questions are "Will Sorin see a new home post rotation" and the more important one "So how bad ass is the new Liliana going to be?" Either way, it doesnt loook very good for Sorin, but I dont think we can rule him out completely. If you could ramp up to him and try a different Mono black Strat, just maybe there will be use for him yet...

Titans

Current Prices/Short Term/Long Term

Sun Titan - $3.99/$3-4/$3-4

Primeval titan - $19.99/$10-15/10-20

Inferno titan - $7.99/$7-12/$5-10

Grave Titan - $9.99/$10-15/$10-20

Frost Titan - $4.99/$5-10/$5-10

Notes: It's hard to say how impactive the titans will be. Not a lot of decks are using them. But I'll take a few shots in the dark. Sun Titan has been waiting for a plant, and when it gets it I think he will prove invaluable. He needs more than Sea Gate and Wall of Omens to break him. Primeval titan will be the worst titan if we dont get another broken land like valakut for him. Inferno remains a huge beater and will see even more play if a token deck arises. He also keeps Elspeth in check, who I expect to see more play in the near future. Grave Titan will be in Mono-Black decks everywhere and may very well be the strongest titan. Frosty is always good in ramp and control but he doesnt have a home yet. I suspect Innastrad will fix that issue however.

Jace, Memory Adept

Current Price - $39.99

Short Term - $30

Long Term - $20-$45+

Notes: I have already talked about this in person with you guys and on two blogs already. So I'll just cut to the chase. This is the chase card of the set. He's gonna see instant play in mill. He is an important plant for the graveyard themed block Innastrad. He can win games on his own very easy, provides card advantage, and seems overall to be a great mix between Beleren and Mind Sculptor. Costing 5 is questionable, but there is a lot of colorless ramp after M12 hits including Wayfarers Bauble, Solemn Simulacrum, Sphere of the Suns, Monolith, and more. He will drop in price shortly after M12 launches, and you will have a short window in which to trade for these before Innastrad hits, which he very well may jump in price.

Primordial Hydra

Current Price - $7.49

Short Term - $5

Long Term - $4-6+

Notes - Usually I dislike these kinds of cards, but I think this card has several things going for it. +1/+1 counters have never had so much support as they do now with proliferate in standard. It's very easy to pull off it's trample condition. I can just imagine this guy in a ramp deck hitting the table with 5 counters turn 4. Then turn 5 you swing for 10, and turn 6 you swing for 20, and they just die. I dont think it is deserving of mythic status but I do think it will see play at the end of the curve of a mono green beats deck. There's a lot of flexibilty with this card and I think it would be wrong to just discount it like I did with Furyborn Hellkite.

Time Reversal

Current Price - $1.49

Short Term - $1

Long Term - $1-2

Notes: WHYWHYWHY??!?!?!?!?! - It actually is more appropriate this time, what with the mill concept stuff floating around...but still, why?

RARES

Call to the Grave

Current Price - $1.99

Short Term -$1-2

Long Term - $1-4

Notes: Call to the Grave was always a great card, but there used to be many more zombies in standard. Still, we have no clue as to what the future blocks will bring us so its hard to dismiss the card, especially since they are reprinting...

Cemetery Reaper

Current Price - $0.99

Short Term - $1-2

Long Term - $1-3

Notes - This guy would have took off in M10 if we went the zombie route. Instead, Zendikar gave us extremely potent vamps like Gatekeeper and Nighthawk which decidedly made us go that route. That said, the vamps of M12 are the weakest ones, and the "Lord" is both expensive and ineffective. So if there will be a Mono-Black aggro deck, it will most likely be zombies. Only time and Innastrad will tell.

Chandra's Phoenix

Current Price - $2.99

Short Term - $2-4

Long Term - $2-5

Notes: This reminds me of a less powerful but more persistant Hell's Thunder. I think the 3 mana investment does pay itself off if you can revive at least once, which shouldnt be a problem in RDW. That said, I dont think it will be a 4 of, but maybe a 2 of. You can't afford to tap down all that mana each turn until later game, and we all know that the longer the game goes on, the less chance RDW has of winning. So I'd say this will see some light play in some decks, will be about as popular as Kargan Dragonlord, except its not mythic. (Note: This is the buy-a-box promo)

Day of Judgment

Current Price - $1.99

Short Term - $1.50-2.50

Long Term - $4

Notes: Where's my Wrath of God? Oh well, another year with this "board sweeper". I think sweepers are going to see a lot more maindeck play post rotation as we steer away from combo decks like Valakut and Exarch Twin and we will go into aggro, beatdown, control and maybe dredge? Either way, I do think that even though its reprinted for a 3rd time Day will shoot up in value after rotation. Yes, combo deck will still be out there but I'm sure wizards is gonna make them a lot harder to pull off this time around.

Dual-Lands(Battle lands)

Notes: This is the 3rd printing and all of the prices will drop again. Glacial Fortress will see an increase as U/W gains more popularity.

Dungrove Elder

Current Price - $2.99

Short Term - $2

Long Term - $1

This card isnt as good as people think it is. First, it can be chumped all day long. Second, hexproof is fairly easy to play around. Third, this means you have to run all Forests. He is strongly outclassed by his cousin, Thrun. I dont think its a bad card, however, I just dont see justifying a place for him with all of his restrictions.

Elvish Archdruid

Current Price - $2.49

Short Term - $2-3

Long Term - $2-3

Notes - 3rd printing so we have to expect it to drop. M12 didnt really give us many ground breaking elves (Though I do like the 1/1 hexproof for one) so its hard to tell what lies in store for elves. But elves always show up in every format so I have no doubt he will at least maintain value.

Adaptive Automaton

Current Price - $4.99

Short Term - $4-7

Long Term - $2-4

Notes - Yeah, so this guy is a lord for any class you want. Or a second lord. Now I dont see anything wrong with making a Jellyfish Tribal deck, but I just dont get the hype on this guy. Lord cards never peak that high and this is the worst lord ever. Still, it could see some play if a tribe emerges that desperately needs a lord. I know Relentless Rats needs one. And maybe Angels could use this guy. I dunno. I think it will see some play but I cannot see how its price will beat the other lords already low prices.

Gideon's Avenger

Current Price - $1.99

Short Term - $1

Long Term -$1-3

Notes: Honestly, whats the first thing you thought of when you seen this card? I thought of Sleep. Yeah, this guy could get out of hand quick. Whether its against a ton of goblins coming your way or you tap down all the chump blockers Elspeth just made, he could be handy. Also note that he is a solider, which they make into a tribal thing once in a while. Overall, I see this guy being huge in sideboards, but lackluster in main. If your opponents have no creatures, this Grizzly Bear for 3 is underwhelming. If your opponent is playing combo, you'll get low value.

Grand Abolisher

Current Price - $7.99

Short Term - $4-6

Long Term -$2-3

Notes: My vote for most overrated card in the set. Most cards that deal with this guy dont have to be played on their turn. Yeah, the best use is to fight off counterspells, but this guy doesnt protect himself at all. That said, there's little reason not to run him in your white weenie deck if you are short on 2 drops. I'd rather them kill this guy instead of my Mirran Crusader or Hero of the Bladehold. Trade these guys off at the prerelease ASAP.

Grim Lavamancer

Current Price - $5.99

Short Term - $4-6

Long Term - $4-8

Notes: Usually, if a card is used widely in legacy, its bound to be outstanding in standard. There are some obvious exemptions though, such as Mental Misstep, Hive Mind, and some others. Grim Lavamancer isnt just good enough to be an autoinclude in any deck with red in it, its also good enough to make legacy decks splash in red just for it. Now, I dont think that Grim Lavamancer will be anywhere near broken in our current standard, and since we are looking at a graveyard themed block ahead it might even dwindle in power. But that doesnt stop it from filling a very important role in red: Being a solid 1 drop. I cant think of a better card to take goblin guide's place in red standard. Perhaps the most important role it plays is being a immediate threat to any creature with 2 or less toughness. That's enough to keep some opponents from playing cards! Combine your on board Lavamancer with any burn in your hand and you can take down nearly anything without losing card advantage. In closing, while it probably is not the best time for Grim Lavamancer to reenter the magic scene, it is more than welcome and will help fill an important role in red for the next year.

Jace's Archivist

Current Price - $2.49

Short Term - $2-4

Long Term -$3-10+

Notes: A possible sleeper. First, let's see some possible combos:

- Combos with Liliana's Caress to deal tons of damage.

- Combos with Jace's Erasure

- Helps mill on its own

- Combos with Conscreated Sphinx

- More potent draws with draw spells like Jace's Ingenuity

- Helps trigger Visions of Beyond

- Helps you to discard "dredge" cards, like Vengevine, Bloodghast, and Vengeful Pharaoh

And this is just one minute of Brainstorming. Imagine what else you could do with this. The trick is to turn the ability into an advantage instead of a blind shot. Build a deck around it and see what possibilties unfold.

Lord of the Unreal

Current Price - $2.99

Short Term - $2-4

Long Term - $1-3

Notes - This lord is notable for a few things. First, he costs one less than most other lords. Second, he is not an illusion himself and therefore a second one will not net you much of a bonus. Third, he is gonna die. This guy is a lightning rod if I have ever seen one. I mean people kill Archdruids insanely fast but if they dont kill this guy then they are going to have a hard time staying in the match. That said, I think illusions are going to be about as popular, if not less popular, than knights. Knights is kind of a cool deck but nowhere near competitive. So expect to see some of these decks at your FNM, but I wouldnt invest in these unless you really want to play an illusion deck.

Monomania

Current Price - $1.49

Short Term - 50 cents

Long Term - 50 cents

Notes: Normally, I'd just put this in the Bulk Rare list and be done with it, but something must be said about this. How dare you make such a crappy discard card, Wizards? You just couldnt reprint Persecute, could you? No Mind Sludge, eh? Instead you print us this overpriced, underpowered trash? Shame. Shame on you, Wizards.

Phantasmal Image

Current Price - $2.49

Short Term - $2-4

Long Term - $2-5

Notes: The best illusion card. Notable for being able to copy Lord of the Unreal and become hexproof itself. May see play outside of illusions, and should outrank Lord of the Unreal in price in the long run.

Quicksilver Amulet

Current Price - $2.99

Short Term - $2-4

Long Term - $1-5+

Notes: Elvish Piper without the legs. Also, for any color. I think the biggest reason Elvish Piper wasnt good was because he was a creature. A creature that was easily dispatched. Now, does that mean Quicksilver Amulet is good? Well, here's a few things to mull over:

- Quicksilver Amulet can cheat some nasty creatures out, such as Eldrazis, Iona, Stormtide Leviathan and more.

- Drawing a second (or third or fourth) is useless and results in a dead draw.

- Artifacts are the some of the most easy permentants to destroy (behind creatures and planeswalkers)

- Most of the big nasty creatures are rotating out (We still have Blightsteel!)

- We never know what nasty creatures they could print next!

- Only one way currently to tutor this up (Hoarding Dragon, and he's rotating)

Overall, to make this card work, you would have to build a deck around it. Problem with that is Quicksilver Amulet is easily neturalized and if you built your deck around it then you will probably lose. Still, if the deck were to create a solid backup plan then I could see this working.

Skinshifter

Current Price - $3.99

Short Term - $4-5

Long Term - $4-8+

Notes: This card wins the best flavor award, hands down. It can hit hard but toughen up if needed, provided you have enough mana. It's a pretty cool card to get later on when you have less to cast so you can invest more mana into it if needed. As far as constructed, I can see it getting there, but I have to wonder if the constant mana drain it will have on you will be worth it. Either way my gut says to pick these guys up and thats what I plan on doing.

Solemn Simulacrum

Current Price - $4.99

Short Term - $5-7

Long term - $4-7+

Notes - What a reprint! Back in the day I loved this card but it seemed to have come at the wrong time. Now I think the time is right and this guy will help any color hit that titan a whole turn early! Combine this with Wayfarers Bauble and any deck gets turn 4 titans! I just cant see a control deck that doesnt want to run 4 of these. Bonus: Your sweepers gain you card advantage! Nothing chump blocks better than this guy. He ran for 5 bucks back in the day so I have no reason to believe that he will drop below that considering how much better he is now. What a perfect reprint.

Sorin's Vengeance

Current Price - $1

Short Term - $1-2

Long Term - $1-3

Notes: - Better than corrupt, most of the time. May be able to pull off thanks to the colorless ramps effects in M12. Notable for instant win after using Sorin's -3. Might end up as bulk, but I think it will see some fringe play for the sheer fact that its a 20 point life swing. Feels a little like Cruel Ultimatium.

Sundial of the Infinite

Current Price - $2.49

Short Term -$1.99

Long Term - $1-3

Notes: The Zur's Weirding of the set, and isnt it a funny one? The coolest thing about this is being able to counter any spell you opponent casts on your turn, but it does cost you your turn. I cant see a cool combo yet, but I can bet that it will see some play in my sideboards vs control decks.

Vengeful Pharaoh

Current Price - $1.99

Short Term - $1.49

Long Term - $2-4

Notes: Sleeper for the upcoming graveyard block. Not much to say, except it is effective in what it does. Also a great great great card to discard/sacrifice with SmallPox.

Visions of Beyond

Current Price - $7.49

Short Term - $5-7

Long Term - $3-7

Notes: The verdict is still out on this card.  Obviously, if we can fill a graveyard fast then this 3 for 1 is insane!  And at the very least it will cantrip, which is better than nothing.  But how quick can we fill a grave?  Faster than we can cast Jace's Ingenuity?  I'm not so sure.  Now I love the concept of this card but I just have my doubts if it will make it (at least in standard).  Investing in this card is purely a risk and you are putting your money into the hopes that next block will help you pay off.  And it surely is possible.

Here is a sortable M12 picture/pricing guide for the cards I have not linked, courtesy of starcitygames.com

Uncommons and Commons of Note (this means pick up foil copys!)

- The Mage Cycle is pretty neat, and I love the concept of Azure Mage. Jade and Crimson may see play as well.

- Buried Ruin could be good.

- Belltower Sphinx is a pretty cool creature for mill. I know red decks would have a hell of a time against it.

- Consume Spirit will be good if we get some mana generator for black

- Goblin Grenade could be an explosive finish for Gobbies

- OMG Oblivion Ring is back!

- Smallpox is gonna be fun, we just have to find a way to break it

- Swiftfoot Boots is Lightning Greaves 2.0 - get on it(going for 3 bucks for nonfoil at the moment)

- Zombie Infestation will probably be nice come fall, with the graveyard themed block.

- Stormblood Berserker = RDW new staple

- Phantasmal Bear is gonna be Goblin Guide 2.0?

- Rampant Growth is back!

- Ponder is back to replace Preordain, but you can enjoy both until then! Exarch Twin and Pyro will enjoy this. (foil copies of ponder go for 8 bucks!)
